“La bellezza di un’iscrizione latina, votiva o funeraria, non ha pari: quelle poche parole incise sulla pietra riassumono con maestà impersonale tutto quel che il mondo ha bisogno di sapere sul conto nostro. L’impero, l’ho governato in latino; in latino sarà inciso il mio epitaffio, sulle mura del mio mausoleo in riva al Tevere; ma in greco ho pensato, in greco ho vissuto”.

Queste poche righe, tratte dal romanzo Memorie di Adriano di Marguerite Yourcenar, ben riassumono il rapporto osmotico instauratosi tra le civiltà greca e latina. L’obiettivo di questo simposio organizzato dall’Associazione Culturale Prolepsis è di riflettere sulle reciproche influenze che hanno interessato sotto molteplici aspetti le due civiltà. Abbiamo scelto di usare (e ribaltare) il titolo del celebre articolo di Greg Woolf, “Becoming Roman, Staying Greek” per rendere al meglio il concetto di interazione biunivoca fra le due culture. Nello specifico, la prospettiva d’indagine proposta verte sulle categorie della transtestualità codificate da G. Genette (intertestualità, metatestualità, architestualità, paratestualità, ipertestualità) e sulla loro individuazione nella letteratura greca e latina prodotta nell’arco temporale compreso tra l’età argentea e l’età tardo-imperiale (secoli I-IV d.C.), periodo in cui, sulla scia della letteratura augustea, il rapporto d’imitazione tra le due culture divenne bilaterale e non più prevalentemente univoco come in passato. In occasione di questo incontro, si darà particolare – ma non esclusiva – attenzione ai seguenti argomenti:
- Evoluzione dei generi letterari nella letteratura greco-romana
- Allusività, intertestualità e reminiscenze tra autori e opere greci e latini
- Circolazione, studio e traduzione di testi greci nel mondo romano e viceversa
- Testimonianze materiali (papirologiche, epigrafiche, archeologiche) del rapporto tra i due mondi
- Influssi linguistici tra greco e latino (sintassi, lessico ecc.)
La partecipazione al simposio in qualità di relatori è aperta a studenti di corsi di laurea magistrale e dottorandi. Per aderire è necessario inviare una e-mail a simposioprolepsis2020@gmail.com entro il 25 Novembre 2019 con i seguenti allegati in formato word e pdf:
1) un abstract anonimo di circa 250-300 parole redatto in lingua italiana o inglese.
2) una breve biografia accademica con nome e affiliazione.
Gli interventi saranno della durata di 20 minuti con 10 di discussione. Le lingue ammesse sono l’inglese e l’italiano.

Exactitude is the third of the Six Memos for the Next Millennium by Italo Calvino (Cambridge MA, 1988). According to Calvino ‘exactitude’ is a «well-defined and well-calculated plan for the work in question; an evocation of clear, incisive, memorable images […]; a language as precise as possible both in the choice of words and in the expression of the subtleties of thought and imagination». The aim of Prolepsis’ 4th International Conference is to reflect on Calvino’s definition applying it to the Classical, Late-Antique and Medieval Worlds. This year the conference will be particularly keen on – but not limited to – the following topics:
– Accuratio vel ambiguitas in speech, argumentation and narration.
– Ambiguous, inaccurate and disconcerting communication from the author, and potential reader response.
– Metrical and musical exactitude and its limits.
– Exactitude in treatises (scientific, rhetorical, grammatical).
– Quoting, misquoting and misplacing.
– Accurate and inaccurate titles, and their transmission.
– Limits in the material evidence (manuscripts, papyri, inscriptions, formation of corpora, mise en page, stichometry).
– Exactitude, doubt, ambiguity in the history of transmission (from ancient lexica, etymologica, and commentaries to modern scholarship).
– Examples of Exactitude and Ambiguity in Ancient and Modern Translations.
– Exactitude and Ambiguity in ancient and modern reception.
– Hypercorrection, lacunae, conjectures and obsession for completeness.
– Exactitude in historical and documentary reconstructions.
– Beginnings and endings of ancient and medieval works: doubtful and exact endings, incipit ex abrupto, etc.
– Finished and Unfinished / Clear and Unclear / Perfect and Imperfect in the philosophical reflection.
The participation in the conference as speaker is open to postgraduate students and early career researchers. To participate send an e-mail to prolepsis.associazione@gmail.com by the 30th of June 2019.
The e-mail must contain the following pdf attachments:
1. An anonymous abstract of approximately 300 words (excluding references) and in English. You should specify if the abstract is for an oral presentation or a poster.
2. A short academic biography with name and affiliation.
Proposals will be evaluated through double-blind peer review by scholars in the Humanities.
The proposal evaluation will be carried out based on the following criteria: consistency, clarity, originality, methods. All abstracts, including those in proposed panels, will be reviewed and accepted on their own merits. Please note that this review is anonymous. Your anonymous abstract is the sole basis for judging your proposed paper for acceptance.
Papers should be 20 minutes in length plus 10 minutes for discussion. The languages admitted for the presentation are English and Italian. Selected papers will be considered for publication. Italian speakers will be required to provide an English handout, power point, and possibly a translation/translated summary of their paper.
Proposals for coordinated panels (three papers reaching 90 min. in total, discussion included) and posters are most welcome. Posters should be written in Italian or English.

Prolepsis’ International Workshop on Latin and Greek Lexicography

The Prolepsis Association in collaboration with the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae is organizing a workshop on the history of lexicography and encyclopedic literature, and lexicography as a profession from antiquity to the present. The event will take place at the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Munich, home of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, partly in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.
We are soliciting abstracts proposals about topics such as (not exclusively):
– ancient, medieval and modern lexica and encyclopedic works concerning the Greek and Latin language;
– cases of correct and incorrect lexicographical interpretations, revisions, misunderstandings;
– biographical portraits of famous (ancient or modern) lexicographers or encyclopedists (e.g. Photius, Stephanus, Egidio Forcellini, etc.);
– the history of lexicographical scholarship;
– lexicography today: what is the job of a lexicographer today, and the role of the digital humanities?
This workshop will be structured in three sessions, two in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a total of nine speakers. Each paper will last 20 minutes at most, and a short discussion will follow each presentation. An introductory speech by the Generalredaktor of the TLL, Dr. Michael Hillen, will begin the workshop.
The most relevant papers may be selected for publication. The official language of the workshop will be English.
Early career academic researchers are invited to send an anonymous abstract, not exceeding 300 words, to the email address:prolepsis.associazione@gmail.com by 15 April 2019.

Call for Papers – Prolepsis in cooperation with the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
Prolepsis Association is happy to fund and support the initiative of a group enterprising of graduate students of the Kapodistrian University of Athens, who are going to host a conference entitled “Something Old, Something New”: The Reception of Classics in Modern and Contemporary Songwriting, taking place in Athens on the 14th September 2018.

The strong influence of Classics in music of all periods and genres is increasingly becoming a topic of interest, especially with regard to Classical Music: we might remember some widely known examples of opera libretti, such as those of Gluck, Monteverdi, Mozart, Wagner, to mention but a few. However, given the variety of genres that permeate modern and contemporary music, it would be of great value to attempt a deeper investigation on the reception of Classical Antiquity in genres such as pop, hip-hop, R’ n ’B rock, and more.
Therefore, Prolepsis Association in cooperation with the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are inviting postgraduate students and Phd candidates to send their proposals for a one-day conference which will be particularly focused (but not limited to):
I. The echoes of Classics in the lyrics, exclusively or in conjunction with music videos and/or cover artwork (myth, art, history).
II. The reception of Classics in local music, e.g. modern musical versions of Classical or Classical inspired poetry (any country is most welcome).
III. Ancient Greek or Latin words as part of modern and contemporary songs.
The main focus will be the music produced around the mid-1950s and onwards, but we will accept contributions that are focused on any music genre starting in the 20th and the 21st century.
Please send two abstracts (one anonymous and one signed) of around 300 words – excluding bibliography – (in English, or Greek with an English translation) of an unpublished work to the e-mail address clamus.prolepsis.philekpa@gmail.com by the 5th of July 2018. Successful applicants will be notified shortly after.
All abstracts should follow the instructions below:

Prolepsis Association is delighted to announce its third international postgraduate conference whose theme will be the mechanisms of selection and loss in ancient and Medieval literary and historical texts. “Optanda erat oblivio” Seneca writes in benef. 5. 25. 2, referring to Tiberius’ wish for forgetfulness. We would like to use this quotation as a starting point for a discussion on the vast number of issues related to memory and oblivion in ancient and Medieval texts. This year the conference will be particularly keen on – but not limited to – the following topics:
- Palimpsests.
- Virtual palimpsests (intertextuality, texts survived in translations, paraphrases and quotations).
- Material losses in the manuscript tradition.
- Selection criteria.
- Places of loss and finding.
- Damnatio memoriae.
- Fragmentary literature.
- Lost known texts.
- Book circulation (destiny of books).
- Found unknown texts.
- Found known texts.
- Texts survived through pseudo-epigraphy.
- Ancient witnesses of selection and loss.
